Male yeast Infection or Penile Yeast infection is not very common but it can easily affect any male who do not care about basic hygiene. Same Candida fungus which is responsible in women for yeast infection is also responsible for infection in males. The symptoms are also more or less common like Itching and irritation in affected area, burning sensation, soreness, tenderness etc. Especially during penile erection the dry scaled skin under penis foreskin appears to crack and cause severe pain. In some cases men also discharge a nasty clumpy whitish fluid which smells foul. Penis may turn reddish and tender.
Though Yeast Infection is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease but it is observed that an unaffected male sometimes do get affected with candidiasis after sexual intercourse with an affected vaginal yeast infected woman. The other main cause for male yeast infection is using condoms which are lubricated with nonxynol-9 spermicide. Researches shows that this spermicide could be the main culprit for developing yeast infection in men.
Prolonged use of antibiotic medicines drastically increases the risk of getting affected with yeast infection. Such medicines disrupt the microorganism balance in crotch and inhibit the growth of protective bacteria; as a result the yeast or candida fungus takes over and multiplies freely and serious symptoms of yeast infection start to show up. Similarly men with diabetes mellitus or AIDS are at a greater risk of developing candidiasis.
Male Yeast infection can easily be treated with prompt and correct medication. Doctors usually prescribe antifungal creams like Monistat (Miconazole) for local application which kill and inhibit growth of fungus in affected area. Patients are also usually advised to take oral pills like Diflucan or Fluconazole etc for immediate relief.
But no matter what medication you use, most important thing is to find out the main cause which has allowed fungus growth in your body. In many cases it is found that wearing tight nylon underwears and clothes which do not allow your skin to breath provide ideal environment for fungus to grow. Studies also showed that using alcohol and excessive sugars in your diet also cause candida to multiply in your body rapidly. Abstaining from these things and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet can help considerably to avoid this painful disease from affecting you.
